MEXICO CITY—Mexico ended a program on Tuesday to grant fast-track visas for humanitarian reasons to a wave of Central American migrants who reached its southern border in recent weeks on their way toward the U.S.
Some 12,600 migrants, the vast majority from Honduras, applied for humanitarian visas since Jan. 16, and 4,000 have already received them, according to Mexico’s National Migration Institute.
The remaining requests will still be processed in the coming days, but from now on migrants seeking a visa for humanitarian reasons will have to apply at Mexican consulates in their countries of origin, a senior immigration official said Tuesday.
The Mexican government didn’t give an official reason for ending the policy. The large influx of migrants was putting a strain on the program, according to one Mexican official.
Asylum requests will continue to be processed normally at Mexico’s southern border.
