Schumer: We Intend to Have More Votes on Emergency Declaration

During a press conference on Thursday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) stated that Senate Democrats intend to bring the resolution against President Trump’s national emergency declaration up for further votes. Schumer said, “[T]he president will first veto it. It goes to the House. It won’t have the 2/3ds. But I believe the law allows us to bring it up every six months, and certainly, we would intend to do that.” Schumer then responded to a question on what would be the point of bringing the resolution up again by stating, “The point of defending the checks and balances that the Founding Fathers put so exquisitely into our government? We’ve got to defend it ten times, even if they knock it down, in hopes of winning the eleventh.” Follow Ian Hanchett on Twitter @IanHanchett

GOP Rep. Kinzinger: Border ‘Deserving’ of National Emergency Because of Drugs, Human Trafficking

Wednesday on CNN’s “New Day,” Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) argued in favor of President Donald Trump’s national emergency declaration at the southern border. Kinzinger, who visited the border and saw the situation firsthand, said there is a “really bad situation” at the border because of the drugs and human trafficking. “What I saw was a really bad situation, something I think is deserving of a national emergency — not because of the immigration issue, but because of the drugs and the human trafficking,” Kinzinger told host Alisyn Camerota. “If you think about the cartels, the Sinaloa and the Zetas, they basically make money on two things: One is trafficking humans, the other is trafficking drugs — both of which are over the border. I saw that lots of people die every year as a result of coyotes running and abandoning them. And so, I think it’s important to share that.” Follow Trent Baker on Twitter @MagnifiTrent

Dem Sen. Udall: Rand’s Prediction of Ten Republicans Voting Against Emergency Has ‘Pretty Good’ Accuracy

On Tuesday’s broadcast of CNN’s “The Lead,” Senator Tom Udall (D-NM) backed Senator Rand Paul’s (R-KY) prediction that ten Republicans in the Senate will vote against President Trump’s national emergency declaration. Rand said, “I think there will be probably ten Republicans. At least six beyond the four that are going to vote for it have told me they will, and it could be higher than that.” Udall then stated, “From the Republicans I talk to, I think his — the accuracy of his prediction is pretty good, that we’re at about ten. But I think we can grow.” Follow Ian Hanchett on Twitter @IanHanchett
