The U.N. Security Council will receive a report this week outlining North Korea’s remarkable success at evading sanctions against its nuclear missile program. According to the report, Pyongyang has been able to import petroleum, export coal, and sell weapons in spite of the toughest sanctions ever imposed against it.
U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration this week expressed dismay over reports of new activity at North Korean long-range rocket site and research center allegedly used to build long-range missiles capable of targeting the United States mainland, demanding that dictator Kim Jong-Un destroy all its nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons before receiving any sanctions relief.

South Korea’s National Intelligence Service said on Tuesday that North Korea is rebuilding the Sohae missile launch facility, a site it pledged to dismantle last year during the early stages of negotiations with the United States.

On Friday’s “PBS NewsHour,” New York Times columnist David Brooks praised President Trump’s policy approach to North Korea, but criticized him for his “appalling” statements about Kim Jong-un. Brooks said, “I actually give the Trump administration a fair bit of credit on this. You know, you would talk to people two years ago who really knew the North Korean situation from the inside, and they were terrified. … And now, we’re in a much better place. … I’m frankly glad Donald Trump walked away from a deal, rather than have a cheap political win. So, are we in a good place? No, but we’re in a lot better place than we were two years ago.
